The purpose of M.Sc Psychological Counselling is to prepare master’s level Counselling Psychologists with academic, professional and personal credentials to provide a variety of counselling services including school counselling, couples and family counselling, and work-place counselling. In addition, students are prepared to pursue academic and research careers as well. Emphasis is given to personal awareness and growth as well as skills training and integration.
It is a professional course with an emphasis on applied training using the theoretical principles of learning, personality, counselling and psychotherapy.Students joining this course are exposed to counselling settings from the first semester onwards in a graded manner to facilitate learning and integration. In addition, they are provided with opportunities to improve their personal awareness through workshops, mentoring programmes and personal counselling services.
Choice Based Credit System
The syllabus for MSc Counselling Psychology follows the regulations governing the choice-based credit system for the two years (four semesters) Master’s degree programmes in the faculties of arts, science and commerce as directed by Bengaluru North University.
The duration of the MSc Program shall extend over 4 semesters (2 academic years) of 16 weeks or more with a minimum of 90 actual working days of instruction in each week, 3 weeks of examination. The syllabus will be taught in English Medium. Students will be treated as adult learners taking the onus for their own learning. 30% of the evaluation of each course will be through Continuous Internal Assessments as guided by Bengaluru North University while 70% of the evaluation will be through the end-semester examinations conducted by the affiliating university. Semester end results and marks cards are published by the affiliating university. Successful completion of all the requirements of the post graduate program will lead to Master’s Degree in Counselling Psychology.
The M.Sc Psychological Counselling is spread across 2 years over four semesters.
B.A/B.Sc degree having studied at least one paper in psychology at the under-graduate level, or
B.Ed or P G Diploma in Counselling from a recognised University with 50% marks in aggregate.
The course work follows the CBCS scheme with core theory & practicals as well as soft-core and open elective papers. Spread over the four semesters, coursework includes thirteen core theory papers focused on conceptual knowledge, five core practicals papers focused on skills training, two soft-core papers, one project work on psycho-educational workshops, one open elective, supervised practicum, and one research dissertation.
Students who successfully complete the M.Sc Psychological Counselling are eligible to pursue M.Phil ,Ph.D or any other equivalent programme in any university or academic institutions around the world. They are also eligible to assume the role of a Therapist in any applied field in any organization. Further, they could also purse a teaching career in Schools / Colleges / Universities.
